The surrogate central government

In India parliamentary democracy appears to be rapidly fading away. Thanks to third front politics and the emergence of a potpourri of regional parties. They have effectively blocked the formation of a viable national alternative to congress party. The appearance of BJP with ‘hindutva’ flavor also did not help the matter much. This has resulted in [...]

Congress is merely biding its time to put off Telangana issue

Congress has no desire to give Telangana statehood and is merely biding its time to put off the issue. Setting up of committees like Srikrishna Committee was just an eyewash. In contrast, BJP has been committed to separate Telangana state and if it comes to power at the Centre in next elections, it would at [...]

Cabinet revamp a damp squib

The much-awaited Cabinet revamp by CM N Kiran Kumar Reddy turned out to be a damp squib as it saw only two new inductions, both from the erstwhile Praja Rajyam Party of Chiranjeevi, and the sacking of one Minister. By-elections and TDP starts another drama with Pranahita

Remember the Babli Project drama by TDP that unfolded right before the earlier by-elections? Looks like it has not taught them a lesson. Are the easy doors opened for T-Traitors by TRS?

It draws my attention with a suspicion, looking at the developments over the last few months where true Samaikyandhra warriors are welcomed with easy doors open into telangana. Wearing the mask of pro-farmer agenda Jagan and CBN are shown safe passage into telangana by TRS. Yes! Why TRS is giving the opportunity to other parties like [...]

Is there a ‘political understanding’ between TRS and YSR Congress?

The allegations of tacit understanding between TRS and YSR Congress gained weight with the media reporting that Jagan had a smooth ride to Nizamabad. But, are these allegations correct? Let me put my view. The TRS and T-JAC leaders, including Kodandaram and T Harish Rao, said that Jagan’s program would face similar protests as witnessed [...]

Numaish is a characteristic of Hyderabad

"Telangana Store" at the exhibition
The 72 All India Industrial Exhibition at Nampally, popularly known as Numaish in the local lingo, this year, has about 2,500 stalls put up by traders from across the country. It’s been many years since it was first organised in the city and it still continues to draw crowds from across the State.
Electronics, garments, crockery, toys, handlooms, handicrafts – name the article and you will find it in one of the stalls in the exhibition. There are crockery stores from Uttaranchal, Himachal and different Northern States. For those willing to purchase some garments, there are plenty of options in the form of Kashmiri silk sarees, Pochampally sarees, Gujarati dress materials.
Make sure to visit the MEPMA stores to buy pickles and other household items and the Prisoners stall to purchase some fresh vegetables cultivated in Cherlapally jail. When you get tired roaming around the sprawling ground, there are many food stalls, including haleem, chat, pop corn and not to mention the good-old sugar candy to rejuvenate.
Don’t forget to visit “Telangana Store” at the exhibition. Lets encourage Sri Vittal ,who initiated it to spread Telangana Chenetha, handicrfts, Vantalu, paintings etc.,

Jagan’s ‘deeksha’ begins today

YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy is all set to stage a high voltage drama today (Tuesday) when he visits Armoor in Nizamabad district to launch his three-day Deeksha in support of crisis-ridden farmers in the State.
The possibility of Jagan facing the kind of protests and demonstrations that were encountered by TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu when he went to Warangal on Friday have not been ruled out. Though the TRS officially has not given any call to obstruct Jagan, T-JAC chairman M Kodandaram Reddy on Monday said that Jagan should make his stand clear before embarking on the tour of the region.
Till such time, the people of Telangana will obstruct anyone who tries to enter Telangana. Jagan, Naidu and Chief Minister all are anti-Telangana, he said.
The students of Osmania University burnt the effigy of Jagan protesting against his Deeksha decision at Armoor and demaned that he first make his stand clear in writing on T state and warned that if he does not do so he will have to face the ire of the people of Telangana as was witnessed during Naidu’s tour.
The joint action committee of civil activists as well as the Congress MPs Madhu Yashki Goud and Ponnam Prabhakar felt that Jagan and Chandrababu Naidu were all against T state. They should first write a letter stating their stand on T state to the centre. If they are allowed, the Seemandhra leaders will suppress the movement, they said.
The TRS, according to party insiders, is of the opinion that they should not go in for any action which was witnessed on May 28, 2010 when 11 people were hospitalised with bullet injuries.Only symbolic protest demonstrations could be held, the party feels.
The firing occurred when a gunman of Congress MLA and supporter of Jaganmohan Reddy, Konda Surekha, opened fire at a crowd at the Mahbubabad railway station when there was heavy stone pelting. The MLA was waiting there with two other public representatives to receive Jagan.
Meanwhile, elaborate arrangements have been made for Jagan’s three-day Deeksha in the district. Nimmala Gardens on Armoor-Perkit Road under Armoor mandal in Nizamabad district has been decked up for the Deeksha.
A huge dais has been erected and the venue is named after YSR.
It is said that about Rs 2 crore has been spent on the arrangements. Apart from YSRCP leaders, some prominent farmers will also sit on the dais.
In all, about two lakh people are expected to participate.
Food, drinking water and other facilities would be provided for about 30,000 people on the first day of Deeksha.
Arrangements were made at Nikhil Sai, Vansi International and other hotels for accommodating MPs, MLAs and other VIPs visiting the venue.
Superintendent of Police Ramakrishnaiah visited the venue and supervised the security arrangements.
Police officials of different categories — local, civil, Armed Reserve, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and AP Special Police (APSP) – would take care of security arrangements at the venue.
Deeksha apolitical, says Jagan
Apprehending trouble from Telangan protagonists, YSRCP president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy has made an appeal to the people and politicians of Telangana not to politicize his proposed Deeksha.
In a four page open letter, released late on Monday night, Jagan termed his Deeksha as “Dharma Yudham” in support of the farmers who were facing severe crisis in 876 mandals.
Lashing out at TDP president Chandrababu Naidu, Jagan said that unlike TDP which was anti-farmer, his party was fighting to draw the government’s attention so that the farmers in distress get some help.
He said while Naidu, during his nine -year rule, had adopted anti-farmer policies and was responsible for the farmers’ suicides, Y S Rajasekhara Reddy had always worked for the welfare of the farmers and stood by them. Even power tariff was hiked during Naidu’s regime, Jagan said and demanded that the government should increase the input subsidy and announce higher minimum support price, he added.
Appealing to the T protagonists and leaders not to link his Deeksha to by- elections or politics, he said his party had taken a decision not to contest the by-polls as the MLAs from the region had resigned for a cause. En-route to Armoor, Jagan will admit sarpanches in Nizampet, Ramayanpet and Jangareddyguda.
He said people of T region should not equate his Deeksha with Naidu’s Warangal yatra. That was for political gains while the Deeksha is apolitical, he said.

Congress leaders stand in queue to meet Sonia Gandhi

NRI (Non Resident Indian) Voting Rights Bill

THE BILL:
Parliament has approved voting rights for non-resident Indians in elections with the Lok Sabha adopting the Representation of the People (Amendment) Bill, 2010, However, the person will be able to exercise the franchise only if he or she is present in the constituency on the polling day. The new law will allow an Indian citizen residing abroad to enrol in voter’s list and exercise his franchise even if he or she remained away from place of residence in India for more than six months owing to employment, education or otherwise.
SITUATION:
There are around 25 million Indians living abroad and it is practically impossible to have 25 million people travel to India at the same time. Only 5 lakh people out of 25 million Indians with all flights completely booked by Indians takes 45 days (the time elections are declared and held). So the NRI Voting Right is NEGATED without resources in place.
CAMPAIGN:
This campaign is about making amendments to “The Representation of People” bill, to be introduced in Lok Sabha, to have a provision for Absentee Voting Facility for Indians living abroad.
Available options for Absentee Voting Facility
1)Postal Ballot
a. Election commission by itself or thru Indian Consulates overseas posts the ballots to NRIs and then NRIs would post it back to the specified address
Short comings: i. The election ballot is usually prepared 30 days before the elections
ii. It is a herculean task for election commission to post the ballot paper to Indians abroad
iii. Very cumbersome and resource intensive and incurs lot of costs from government of India
2) Internet Voting
a. Registered NRI voters would use internet to print ballot paper and submit online.
Short comings: i. Technologically, we are not there yet. Hopefully we will be there soon to use this mode of voting.
3) Combination of Internet and Postal Ballot
a. Election commission (EC) uploads e-ballot to the EC’s website and NRIs can download, exercise their franchise and send it back as per the norms (could be attach attested passport identification page copy, proof of residence etc.) defined by EC.No major shortcomings.
Benefits:
a. Reduces logistics and finance involved in mailing Postal Ballot from Indian Govt.
b. It’s a safe and secure way of voting by any Indian citizen residing overseas.
c. The time frame perfectly suits to send the casted ballot paper back.
SOLUTION:
We strongly believe that for all practical purposes, option 3 – Combination of Internet and Postal Ballot is more practical, reasonable and feasible solution in current situation.
We, The INDIANS living outside India are eagerly looking forward to use our vote (freedom) for the next elections.
In Support of NRI Voting Rights

Jagan to face the ire of Telangana supporters during his fast

Kadapa MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy is likely to face stiff opposition from Telangana supporters during his proposed fast in Nizamabad district this week, over his “stand” on the separate statehood demand.
“Three parties – Congress, TDP and YSR Congress – are not making their stand clear on Telangana. YSR Congress Party has the responsibility to answer. Since they (YSR Congress led by Jagan) had displayed a placard in Parliament in support of united Andhra Pradesh, people of Telangana will question,” TRS MLA and party president K Chandrasekhar Rao’s nephew T Harish Rao told reporters here today.
Jagan is organising the protest at Armoor in Nizamabad district on January 10 over various issues concerning farmers. He had earlier faced violent protests when he ventured to undertake his ‘odarpu yatra’ (tour for consoling) in Warangal district.
The YSR Congress party maintains that though it respected the sentiments of Telangana people, it is for the Centre to take a decision on the separate statehood issue.
Meanwhile, Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) convener M Kodandaram said that the visit of Jagan will be opposed if he does not make his stand clear on the separate statehood issue.

Is Telangana a ‘Banana Republic’ in A.P.!

Pro-Telangana supporters during a protest demanding separate state
If we go by the happenings in Telangana region, we do not know whether we are living in democratic governance or in a Banana Republic. The State administration has unleashed a ‘Police Raj’ in the region.
The meaning of a Banana  Republic is ‘a country operated as a commercial enterprise for private profit, effected by the collusion between the State and favored monopolies, whereby the profits derived from private exploitation of public lands is private property, and the debts incurred are public responsibility’. It is not very difficult to imagine who the favored monopolies are. Obviously it is andhra political combine and Congress adhishtanam.
  1. Nehru/Indira Gandhi/Soniya Gandhi in collaboration with andhra political cartel have provided the state support for andhra monoply for the systematic looting of Telangana. It is perhaps the worst example in a democracy. It can only be compared to Sudan like situations in undemocratic and oligarchic governments.
  2. The looting which was shrouded in a smog, has now fully cleared and became open after 9, December 2009. Today it has percolated to grass root levels to become a heartrending folklore. Telangana folk singers have more facts, more questions and answers than us educated about this systematic exploitation.
  3. Telangana people did everything under the Sun; death of a thousand people for the cause; a quarter million congregation, a million march, a total mobilization of ’sakala janulu’, total paralyzation of the administration in the region; forcing a lame duck government in the state; stalling the proceedings of assembly and parliament. In fact the state government is mortally afraid of convening an assembly session for the fear of Telangana backlash.Telangana  people have forced the central Govt. to make a declaration of the initiation of the formation of Telangana in Parliament. They have done everything within the bounds of democracy. But to no avail.
  4. In turn both Central and State governments are ganged up together, to stampede the legitimate aspirations of Telangana people. They are using every loophole in our kind of democracy and the bad tenets in state authority to keep Telangana people at bay .They are intimidating the people with brutality, using paramilitary and police force, in addition to bizarre political manipulations.
  5. The central government has provided to State about 30,000 Special Forces to suppress Telangana movement. They are laying siege to university campuses at the drop of the hat and brutally assaulting the students. They are beating and binding over even girl students. They are resorting to binding over and preventive detention of people in hundreds and thousands to prevent them from attending peaceful protests or before the tours of Ministers, MLAs and other political leaders. The tours of opposition leader in Telangana have become a demonstration of collusion of ruling and opposition parties to totally stampede Telangana Movement. Government is spending crores of rupees to contain the movement. It is appearing that the mandate given to NKR by Soniya Gandhi is suppression of Telangana Movement at any cost.
  6. The brutal allegedly, police sponsored murder of Sambasivudu, detention of Dr.Cheruku Sudhakar under archaic PD Act; the heinous assault on Yakoob Reddy, a research Scholar by Warangal Police; foisting hundreds of false cases to intimidate students, lawyers, folk artistes and imprisoning them whenever they want, are some of the dastardly acts of this autocratic administration.
  7. Such things are happening over a long period of time. A maliciously determined effort is being made by andhra political combine with their political majority and with the active connivance of family oligarchy of Central government, to convert Telangana into a ‘Banana Republic’ within a democratic state. The rest of the country is watching it placidly. Though, more or less all the political parties in the opposition are supporting Telangana, the national media is quite indifferent to the travails of Telangana people. Though Telangana people are demanding for the demerger of their state back, as andhras have violated all agreements in letter and spirit and subjected the region to a systematic exploitation, some News papers try to portray it as an attempt for sesession. Many senior journalists have a superficial view of the Movement and make very biased observations.
  8. While  Anna Hazare’s anti corruption crusade is very important, it is very amorphous, what shape it is going to take; when it is going to be grounded ; what results it can achieve  are in the realm of speculation.Yet,We all wish there should be an effective Ombudsman to fight corruption.
Where as, Telangana Movement is a crusade against political corruption since 1956. It is real; a classical example of how political majority based on conceited ethnic chauvinism can lead to political imperialism and exploitation of a region. The details of the exploitation are made bare several times over. Yet, no body discusses the exploitation – the deliberate backwardness foisted on Telangana people; looting all the riches from Telangana. But, everybody preaches platitudes. The refrain of many of the big wigs is, be united and get exploited. One should be born a Telanganite to understand the angst of Telangana people. Other people should see the things and analyze them with some intellectual honesty, before airing their views. The formation of Telangana would be a turning point, to unravel all the bad tenets of present day governance in India. For, most of the political maladies that are plaguing India are akin to the ones manufactured by Andhra political class in the state.
  9. The question is why rest of the nation is not reacting while Telangana is suffering. Both Central and State governments are determined to suppress ‘Telangana Movement’ by creating a deliberate political and administrative log-jam. They are turning the region in to a ‘Banana republic’ of andhras. The fundamental rights of people are abrogated. People are imprisoned with out reason. Government funds are spent to suppress the democratic struggle of people. Government machinery and government funds are used to allow anti –telangana campaigns of political parties. The SHRC and NHRC are simply watching the human rights violations in the region. The dastardly acts of PDA, brutal assaults, binding over, preventive detentions, foisting hundreds of of illegal cases etc., is becoming a routine. The Governor, the speaker, the CM and the Ministers all are arraigned against Telangana, whie all the four crore Telangana people are fighting for Telangana. The recourse to Courts, because of the red tape and deliberate non cooperation of executive is not yielding desired results. In effect we are in an autocratic ‘Banana republic’ in the middle of a Democracy. There is a need for people from other parts of the country to react to this attempt. For, this is a serious issue involving the downsizing of parliamentary democracy by the present UPA government.
It is now for the civil society to find ways to thwart these undemocratic attempts by the government. They have a duty to protect the people fighting forTelangana on the streets, from the deliberate state sponsored brutalities.
